Sega Sammy Holdings is going to buy Rovio Entertainment, the parent company of the once popular mobile games Angry Birds, for $1 billion. This information is known from a report of The Wall Street Journal on Friday (April 14).

According to the report, the agreement to buy the parent company of Angry Birds may be completed by next May.

The first Angry Birds mobile game came out in 2009. At that time, this game became very popular all over the world. But around 2014, the popularity of the game began to decline. Even at that time there were layoffs. Sega is going to buy the game for 1 billion dollars even after its popularity has decreased. So many have expressed surprise about this.

2016 is not a new move for Angry Birds to regain popularity. That year, the company brought the video game based movie The Angry Birds. The animated movie was also successful. The movie is the seventh highest grosser at the box office in the video game movie category to date.

The sequel of the movie, The Angry Birds Movie 2, released in 2019, however, was not so successful. At that time, the popularity of Candy Crush, a rival game to Angry Birds, was growing.

Meanwhile, Rovio recently removed the Angry Birds mobile game from the Google Play Store. However, the game has been renamed Red's First Flight on iPhone.

Angry Birds mobile game is the first game, which has been downloaded 100 million times. Apart from this, Rovio claims that last year the number of downloads of all the company's games reached 5 billion.
